P.W.G Minutes of the Meeting on 27 April 2017

Venue: Neo’s Sports Club, Peyia

Greetings scribes, a small turnout this week but with plenty of discussions.

Present:

John Goodwin Jennie Rook Sharon Whitehouse Eddy Kent Dee Leigh

John raised the subject of the PWG Poetry and Illustration Competition for 2017. This year we will be asking the entries to be submitted after the summer holidays, during the 1st week back in the autumn term. This enables all schools enough time to work on the entries without impacting upon their curriculum plans. The award presentation could be held just before the half term to ensure all participants and winners are in Cyprus to collect and attend.

It was decided that we will all look for sponsors within the Paphos business community.

It was noted that we already have support from PALS, Paphos Mail and Cyprus Mail for press exposure.

Sharon offered to ask the Orphean Singers and Stavros at Neo’s Sports Club for support. The finance manager at Philippos Supermarket was also mentioned as a possible sponsor. Other contacts from schools and businesses will be welcomed, so please ask anyone you think is suitable as prospective sponsors. Ideally, we need to raise between €150 and €200 to cover press coverage, prizes, venue and catering.

It was decided that a press release will be produced by Jennie, using cuttings from last year’s event and photos, to announce this year’s event in the local papers.

It was decided that the same schools from last year should be invited and also opened up to the Peyia School, with an approach made by Jennie from Sharon’s contact, Stavros.

Initial ideas for this year’s topics for the competition were discussed and there will be a choice of 2:

1. Bullying – from either points of view

2. What makes me happy

Input from teachers will also be sought and will be discussed further during next week’s meeting when more members are present. With the first topic in mind, Eddy read his poem entitled ‘Bullying’.

Reading from last week’s homework on a radio play:

John Goodwin's 'Dan and Louise in the car'

Read in character by: Sharon Jennie Dee Eddy

A discussion followed with Sharon introducing her new idea for her book or series to the group which will be written from the boat’s point of view, based on its journeys and situations it encounters.

Eddy Sea of Dreams poem of his 1st day arriving in Cyprus

Forgetfulness poem about Dementia while working in a home for dementia patients

My angel poem based on a story told by an 80/90 year old man about his wife
