Minutes of the meeting 16th May 2019 Venue: Neos Sports Club, Pegeia
Greetings scribes, An interesting meeting this week partially due to a visit from former member Mick O’Reardon.
Present: Svetlana Garshina, Helen Ratcliffe, Liz Coyne, John Goodwin, Maurice Holloway, Michael White, Jordi Guri, David Greensmith and Guest Mick O’Reardon.
John called on Mick to bring us up to date on his writing exploits since he moved back to the UK:
Dissatisfied with the local writing group he joined once settled in in West Yorkshire, Mick appealed to the U3A and was told they did not have a writer’s group up to that point but now they did because he would start it. That was 4 years ago his group, based in Bridlington, is still going strong. His Memoirs as a Farrier which he started writing when he lived here in Cyprus has found interest from major publisher McMillan. He is currently polishing his manuscript ready for submission.
Readings (based on the “When love goes wrong,” theme):
Svetlana Story Everything Perfect on the Wrong Day
Maurice Story Frame of Mind
John Story Pussy.
Michael Poem Are you Lonesome Tonight.
Jordi Article Philip Marlow (Part 1)
At a suggestion from Mick O, John challenged the group to Speed-write for ten minutes on the theme of “Aeroplane” but without using the words “and” or “the”.
Coffee break 11.0.am to 11.15.am
After the break members read their responses with varying levels of success.
Maurice brought to our attention a debut novel, “Here in No Place” by A.W. Timmons.
He related how alternate chapter were written in 1st person and 3rd person mode but maintained the same point of view character which he found most annoying.
There followed a discussion on Narrative mode looking at 1st and 3rd person point of view. Our notes on the subjects can be found in our Tutorials page.
This week’s Writing Prompt: Write a poem or story up to 1000 words on any theme but in the rarely used 2nd person Narrative mode.
Thanks to all who attended, next meeting 23/5/19 at Neos.
